American Central Dust

I am ashamed to say I never heard of the Sultana disaster until Jay Farrar enlightened me on the latest Son Volt record American Central Dust.


The more I listened to this record the more I believe it will stand the test of time and may possibly be up there in the ranks with Son Volt's epic debut album Trace.

Our Friend Mike O’Toole

Back in May of 2006 I logged a brief posting on Mike who plays in a band called The Friendly Henrys.

Mike O’Toole is a dedicated husband and father of three who has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer. Mike is an active Kirkwood resident, a painter by trade and a very talented musician.

Wolfgang's Vault

Bill Sagan (Former CEO of EBP) of Minnetonka, MN bought the Bill Graham Presents archives and has organized hundreds of millions of dollars worth of merchandise and video/audio recordings of concerts collected by Graham. Sagan is now selling some of the collection at Wolfgang's Vault, named for Bill's given name at birth. Sagan is now being sued, by several of the artists, for alleged rights infringement.
The Wolfgang's Vault website is paying artist as if they were an Internet radio station. It provides all music for free and pays its bills with the sale of concert memorabilia. More Info

'The Search' in stores March 6 -- Album Marks Farrar's and Son Volt's Most Diverse Record Yet

'The Search,' the intriguing new album from Son Volt, is set for release on March 6 on Transmit Sound/Legacy, and it's by far the band's most daring and diverse album yet. The follow-up to 2005's acclaimed 'Okemah and the Melody of Riot,' 'The Search' is a startlingly powerful and inspiring departure from the band's alt-country laden records, employing an exceptional variety of sounds, melodies, and arrangements.

"Instrumentally, the electric guitar was the focus of the last record 'Okemah', but for 'The Search' we wanted to try something new, " says songwriter Jay Farrar. "This time, we utilized different instrumentation to fit each song -- from guitar pedal loops to various keyboard sounds to horns."

The piano of 'Okemah's' gorgeous closing ballad "World Waits For You" returns here to open 'The Search' with the beautifully haunting processional "Slow Hearse." Laced with Eastern-style electric guitar and Farrar's signature vocals, the tune fades out to silence only to dive into 'The Picture,' a track that features an upbeat Memphis-style horn section combined with stirring lyrics that reflect on the current and future state of things, "when war is profit and profit is war."

There's the buzzing, Zeppelin-esque guitar of "Action"; the hypnotic, other-worldly riff of "Circadian Rhythm"; the vocal harmonizing of chanteuse Shannon McNally on "Highways and Cigarettes"; and the Big Brother commentary of title track "The Search," a solid rock song delivered as only Son Volt can.

'The Search' features Jay Farrar (vocal, guitar, piano), Dave Bryson (drums), Derry DeBorja (keyboards), Andrew Duplantis (bass, backing vocals) and Brad Rice (guitar).

Jay Farrar, who is currently wrapping up a run of dates with Anders Parker as part of their side-band Gob Iron in support of the duo's debut 'Death Songs For The Living,' will hit the road with Son Volt for a national tour in March.

Son Volt's 'World Waits For You' Featured on Grey's Anatomy

Way back in 1998 my favorite band Son Volt created a buzz when "Chanty", from the bands third album "Wide Swing Tremolo" was used in a 1999 VW Golf TDI commercial.

Fast forward nearly a decade later. The "World Waits For You" was featured on Grey's Anatomy on Thursday, November 30 on ABC. This song can be found on the classic 'Okemah And The Melody Of Riot' which came out in 2005.

The Cantina Bar Tales

My friend David is currently (July/August) shooting an Indie film called 'The Cantina Bar Tales' in St. Louis.

Here is a snippet from the website...

'The Cantina Bar Tales is a comedy centered around three friends telling stories of their romantic misadventures at their favorite watering hole, a place known as the Cantina Bar. Adding perspective to this is a fourth friend, an English grad student teaching an undergrad class on three newly discovered chapters from Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century literary masterpiece The Canterbury Tales.'

The video blog is especially amusing.

2nd Annual Mound City Music Fest

Mound City Music Fest to benefit Music Maker’s New Orleans Musicians Fund, St. Louis’ South City Open Studio and Gallery for Children, and two additional St. Louis-based charities

Son Volt, Patterson Hood, Vic Chesnutt and Joe Pernice to perform

Jay Farrar, St. Louis resident and founder of both Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, will unite musicians from across the country for an evening of performances in support of Music Maker’s New Orleans Musicians Fund and St. Louis’ South City Open Studio and Gallery for Children (SCOSCAG). The second annual Mound City Music Fest, a special night of music, will be presented by KDHX FM 88.1 and PLAYBACK:stl at The Pageant in St. Louis on Saturday, December 10, 2005.

This year’s event features Son Volt, Patterson Hood (of the Drive By Truckers), Vic Chesnutt and Joe Pernice. Tickets for the event will go on sale November 4 and are $30 in advance and $35 day of show. Doors will open at 6:00 pm and the show will begin at 6:45 pm. Tickets will be available at The Pageant box office and through Ticketmaster. This is an all ages event.

A special limited-edition poster is being designed for this event by Eric Woods of Firecracker Press in St. Louis. The posters will be signed by all musicians on December 10 and in an effort to raise more money for the causes, they will be sold via Jay Farrar/Son Volt website for $50 each. In addition to the Music Maker and SCOSAG funds, poster proceeds will also benefit St. Stephen's Early Childhood Development Program and Friends of Carondelet Park. St. Stephen’s is a preschool and safe haven for children with allergies and asthma--the only allergen-free center in the St. Louis area. A portion of sales from the posters will benefit their tuition program for low-income families. Friends of Carondelet Park is a St. Louis organization dedicated to restoring the 179-acre city park established in 1876. Funds raised by FoCP support needed improvements such as walking paths, landscaping projects with native Missouri species, and special community events in this historic city park.

Music Maker Relief Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the true pioneers and forgotten heroes of Southern musical traditions gain recognition and meet their day to day needs. Today, many such musicians are living in extreme poverty and need food, shelter, medical care, and other assistance. As an extension of the Music Maker Foundation, a Hurricane Katrina relief fund has been set up to make grants available for basic living expenses such as gasoline, food, rent, clothing and instrument replacement. The Programs Coordinator will help artists connect with FEMA, the Red Cross, Social Services and Music Cares as well as passport replacement, finding performance opportunities and relocation expenses. www.musicmaker.org
